Blanchfield Army Community Hospital supports the National Patient Safety Goals:
- Identify patients correctly
- Use medicines safely
- Use alarms safely
- Prevent infection
- Identify patient safety risks
- Improve staff communication
- Prevent mistakes in surgery
Blanchfield Army Community Hospital earned the Army's Safety and Occupational Health "Star Status" designation for safety following an on-site review May 27-30, 2014. Workplace safety is critical for organizations across the Army and is especially critical in a medical environment. Worksite safety helps ensure employees and patients are protected from a variety of potential serious hazards in clinical operations.
To achieve Star Status, organizations must complete three stages of assessments focused on management leadership and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training.
This program allows employees to take ownership of the safety within their workplace, including patient safety as well as their own safety and that of fellow employees.
Aligning BACH safety standards with the national and MEDCOM standards helps ensure that our hospital personnel are maintaining the most effective safety practices and procedures in the workplace, which positively impacts patient care.
Blanchfield Army Community Hospital was recognized by the Secretary of the Army for successfully completing 14 months of preparation and an onsite review in May 2014. Blanchfield's team sought to implement the Army Medical Command Safety and Occupational Health Management System, a pilot program with Army-wide implications. The management system is comprised of four components, the management commitment and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control as well as safety training. The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, The Honorable Katherine Hammack, presented the award on behalf of the Army.
BACH served as the first Army Medicine hospital and first stateside facility to receive the award for achieving excellence.
